Why you should always use a travel agent

Updated: Oct 1, 2022

Are travel agents still "a thing"? Why shouldn't I just book my trip myself? Aren't travel agents expensive? There are many questions surrounding using travel agents, but one thing remains constant - they are your best bet for making sure your vacation goes off without a hitch.

Traveling can be confusing, complicated, and stressful - when you're booking your own travel. Travel agents have the experience, knowledge, and resources to take all of that stress away.

“The average traveler spends up to 12 hours researching their vacation for themselves.”

Isn't using a travel agent expensive?

No! Most travel agents (including me) are completely free to use. Travel agents earn commission from the vendors they sell through, so there is no need to charge a fee to the customer. Using a travel agent can in fact be cheaper - they are able to often find deals on travel for you, and they can navigate you away from things that might be a waste of money. They can advise you on the best dates, hotels, and flights for your trip as well. Additionally, travel agents also have the ability to take payments for your trip instead of paying for the entire trip upfront when you book with online websites.

Why shouldn't I just book my trip myself?

Travel agents typically know all of the ins and outs of where you are traveling. And if they haven't been to the particular place you want to go, I guarantee they know someone who has! I personally work with a group of 30 agents - it's hard to find a place one of us hasn't traveled. Because of this, they can save you a ton of time. The average traveler spends up to 12 hours researching their vacation for themselves. Most people are too busy to research thoroughly and may end up not happy with their choices simply because they didn't have the time to look into them more. A travel agent will do all of that research for you, plus they can handle everything unexpected that may occur.

What are my risks when using a travel agent?

None! In fact, you actually lower your risk of dealing with something unpleasant while you travel. Emergencies unfortunately do happen, and a travel agent can help you navigate dealing with the unexpected on your trip. They can also help you with travel insurance so those emergencies don't result in an expense you can't afford.

What else can a travel agent help me with?

Travel agents provide a number of services. Not only can they book your transportation and accommodations, they can also research and book any excursions or activities you might be interested in enjoying. They can also help you with creating itineraries, making dining reservations, and "skipping the line" at major tourist attractions.

Bottom line - a travel agent can save you time, money, and headache. The only question left is... where do you want to travel next?
