Ahhh Maui. Gorgeous beaches, incredible views, and delightful food options. On an island that prides itself on presenting farm-to-table cuisine everywhere you turn, perhaps the most highly-rated restaurant is Mama's Fish House. Don't be fooled by the simple name. Mama's Fish House is anything but simple - there is a reason reservations can be hard to get and often book out 3-6 months in advance. With a limited menu that changes daily based on what local fishermen catch that morning, this gourmet restaurant, located on the northern coast of Maui, is a must-do for anyone visiting the island.
With 4 kids, going out to eat anywhere nice is somewhat an adventure. However, I knew that Mama's Fish House was something we did not want to miss.
I was correct.
From the gorgeous views of the sun setting over the ocean to the attentive service to the incredible food, our dinner at Mama's Fish House was a delight. The restaurant is set on a picturesque beach in Paia. When you enter, you walk through tropical trees to what looks similar to a quaint beach house. From inside the dining room, wall-to-wall windows give you a panoramic view of the beach and ocean beyond.
Usually, I would be a little nervous taking all of our children to a nicer restaurant, but the staff at Mama's Fish House immediately put us at ease. They had activity packs for the younger ones, and treated our oldest like a sophisticated adult, which she loved. They put fun umbrellas and garnishments on the kids' drinks, and when my son spilled his almost immediately, they quickly cleaned it up without a fuss, dismissing our apologies with a smile.
My husband and I absolutely love trying new foods, and luckily, our children do as well. While Mama's Fish House does have a kids' menu, my husband made the declaration that the kids could order whatever they wanted. And boy, did my younger daughter take advantage of that! The next thing we knew, she was ordering the twin lobster tails! A deal was a deal, but I'm pretty sure my husband will add a few stipulations the next time we take the kids to a nice restaurant.
Overall, the food was a culinary treat. As I mentioned before, the menu at Mama's Fish House changes daily based on what local fishermen have caught that same morning, so everything they make is incredibly fresh. I enjoyed the Hawaiian Kanpachi (pictured at the top), my husband had an Antarctic toothfish (pictured below), and our older daughter ordered the Opah. Our younger daughter thoroughly enjoyed her twin lobster tails - it was the first time she had ever tried lobster. Our son, almost 4 at the time, had the traditional kalua pork from the children's menu. The youngest was still on a liquid diet at this point, which I'm sure he was pretty satisfied with. All of us devoured every single bite of our food and there were zero complaints, which for a family of 6 is pretty rare!
After dinner, we went out to the beach to take some family pics as the sun set. We weren't the only ones with this idea, as there were many people doing the same. However, that allowed us to get a rare full family photo since there were plenty of people kind enough to offer to take one. Overall, Mama's Fish House was an amazing experience and will definitely be a place to which we return next time we are on Maui!
